What a massive wine with intimidation! Buckle-up and arm yourself with a cheese knife. This big, rich red is a blend of Italy’s version of zinfandel, called primitivo, plus traditional zin and a smidge of Italian teroldego. The introduction is a bit alcoholic and heady with aggressive red and black fruits. The wine’s tannins and intensity mellow with strong hard cheeses like Parmesan, telling us a story of ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Whole wheat pasta with homemade pesto made this wine harmonize. This bottle would be more approachable in another 3-5 years, or for the more impatient, after 12 hours of decanting. There’s no doubt there are some Davids ready to take-on this Goliath now though.
